A Research on the Effects of Art Therapy Program on the Recovery of Resilience of a Young Sexual Offender

Abstract
The purpose of this study is to examine the effects of art therapy program for the recovery of resilience of a young sexual offender. The study subject is a college male freshman, who was ordered to attend a 20-hour lecture program of preventing sexual offense by the Court of Family Affairs in city A. He was arrested by violating the Act on the Protection of Children and Juveniles¡¯s Sex. The research tool used in the study is Korean Quotient of Resilience-53, which was developed by Reivich & Shatte(2003) for adults, and translated and revised by J. H. Kim(2011) for Korean. The results of this study are; Firstly, the art therapy program has positive impact on the resilience of the young sexual offender. The posttest result, measured after the art therapy, shows a significant increase in his resilience, compared to the pretest. Secondly, the art therapy program has positive influence on the subordinate areas(self control, personal relations, and affirmation) of the subject. These results implicate that art therapy helps the study subject manage his inner desire and express his feelings securely, so diverse changes are revealed in his self control, way of personal relations, and affirmation. Through the result of this study, it was shown that the art therapy approach has the effects of decreasing the violation rates of the young sexual offenders.
